As a rough guide, small offices of up to about 25 users often use a FortiGate 40F/50G or Sophos XGS 88/108, while offices of 25–100 users often need a FortiGate 60F/70G/90G or Sophos XGS 118/128/138. The appliance is the physical firewall. The licence (FortiGuard bundle for FortiGate, Xstream or Standard Protection for Sophos) enables security updates such as antivirus, web filtering, intrusion prevention and application control, plus vendor support. Without an active licence the firewall keeps routing traffic, but its protection stops updating.
